Green Screen Experience

I really enjoyed our class yesterday due to the green screen project.  I always wonder how the newscasters presented their story in the studio.  I had a lot of challenges as usual trying to keep-up and understand the process of how to produce my green screen project.  At first it did turn-out as expected and I needed to do it again to get it close to right.  I had problems uploading to YouTube due to password and email issues.  So the next step was to put the video in my drop box which I obviously did not do correctly because it was not there when I tried to retrieve it.  Therefore, I was totally bumed-out because I had nothing to show for my efforts that evening.

However, I never gave-up, the next day my student computer genius  walked me through the process and showed me how to redo the project on my MacBook Pro.  I recently  joined the Mac world and Ethan has been tutoring me slowly in order to help bring interests and excitement to my health class.

I am planning to do a green screen project in my health classes in the near future once I have learned the process thoroughly.  I am please to say that my graduate technology classes have been very useful.

Curriculum Night Project (20% percent project)

I would like to share a Digital Storytelling project that was implemented by my 8th grade students.  We the teachers are required to meet with parents two nights of the year.  We share information about our curriculum and expectation of our class.  I decided to do a digital story using my students to provide the information about my Initiative/Advisory Class.  The students share information and expectation about the Initiative/Advisory. Also, they included information on the two units covered in Health called Nutrition and Life Skills.  The students had to work together and were required to include music, texts, images, pictures, and creativity.  The students did an amazing job and the parents enjoyed the Digital Video.  They even included a Nutritional Musical Rap.  The energy of the students was very visible in the video.  They all had a lot of fun and that is what Digital Storytelling brings to the class.  This project was my 20 percent time requirement.  I am hoping Dr. Penny will share our 20 percent projects before this class is over, so we can get some ideas from each other.

Group Digital Storytelling Project

This is a short reflection of our group project on Digital Storytelling in the school setting.  We explore the usefulness and benefits of Digital Storytelling in the Elementary School, Middle School, and Special Education areas.  We all agreed that Digital Storytelling has it place in the school system.  We felt that students would find more interests and excitement when completing school project by implementing technology as a tool to provide their messages.  We all have utilized Digital Storytelling in the classroom and have witness a high level of energy, excitement, and creativity in our students’ work.  The video will help you understand the benefits of Digital Storytelling in the school setting.  We hope that you will make Digital Storytelling apart of your teaching repertoire.

Glogster.com

In my 8th grade health initiative class, my students are designing a digital poster.  The topic of discussion is our Life Skill Unit which shares information on anger management, assertiveness, drug prevention, peer pressure, social skill, media influence, and anxiety.  Students were assigned a chapter to share with the class.  The students  reviewed the material and then created a digital poster.  The program used is called Glogster. To access this site go to Glogster.com.  The use of this computer program costs $30.00 a year.  Glogster allows the students to create a poster where they can upload images, texts, sound, music, pictures, and videos.  I love this type of program because it allows my students to be more creative.  The students enjoy opportunities where they can express themselves in a new way.  For example of a digital poster click on this link http://so84hjk.edu.glogster.com/glog/
Digital Story on Nutrition

One of my initiative projects in  8th grade health class at T/E Middle School is Nutrition.  I had my students learn about the values and importance of eating healthy.  The students were put into groups and given a certain section to research about nutrition.  Their source of information was provided by the resources of MyPlate.gov.  It provided information about  fruits, vegetables, proteins, grains, and dairy.  The site also had interactive activities to help  make learning about nutrition interesting.  Each group of students were assigned to report  information on this particular website.  They were also assigned to do a Digital Story about the importance of making half  MyPlate fruits and vegetables.  The students enjoyed making the video.
I have a video clip of one of my groups' project.  We are not allowed to post our students faces on the web.   Therefore,  I will show a group who faces are not displayed.

The Coach's Eye App

The Coach's eye app was created by the TechSmith in Michigan.  This app cost $1.05 and can be purchased at the iTunes store.  This app allows you to study athlete movements and provide feedback.  It has the capability to allow you to  review the athlete movements in slow motion while giving audio commentary as you record.  Coach's eye has several ways to draw on the video to provide more awareness to certain movements.  This app would  be very useful as a basketball coach or any sport.  I coach  middle school basketball and I have been trying to find a way to show my players the correct way to dribble, shoot, and pass during basketball practice.  Coach's eye will be a great tool because I can record their action and narrate it at the same time.  Their movements can be control by a flywheel which allows you to slow down their movement for closer review.  The key components to the Coach's eye are the ability to capture the athlete's movements, to slow down the motion for further review, to draw detailed information on the video, to provide audio commentating, and to make the adjustments after review.  I also think this app could be utilized in my Physical Education class to show students how to perform the correct mechanics in throwing, catching, and running.  It would be so much easier if students could see what you are trying to correct.

Door Scene

This past week my Digital Media Production and Storytelling class had to do a door scene in groups of three with very specific guidelines that included no video editing, only one Actor or Actress, be within five feet of a door, display a stressful/worrying feeling followed by a sense of calmness/peace.

I really enjoyed this activity, it allowed for creativity and imagination within our group.  Our group decided to do a car scene where one of our members being distressed going to her car due to hearing foot steps approaching as she was entering her car.  After the fact, we felt there were some adjustments needed to make it more realistic; however, I thought our project was pretty good because we stayed within the parameters.

Reflection of Ohler's Book

Ohler's book provided me lots of information on many essentials of Digital Storytelling.  It has been stated that  Storytelling has existed  for many years  according to Ohler.  The Digital Storytelling  approach allows for individuals to express a more personal and emotional aspect of the information that is being presented.   It allows you the listener  to feel  the speaker's inner feelings and passion for the story being presented.  These chapters also shared  how Digital Storytelling  can help develop your thoughts in a more effective manner.
In this book there were many Digital Story  examples  that incorporated narration, music, still pictures, video and other forms of media to enhance the storytelling.  All of the examples allowed the presenters an  opportunity to develop one's own uniqueness and creativity.  When reading these examples you get a sense of personal engagement and excitement  of what is being shared.  The stories are brought to life with music, pictures, and narration.  The examples ranged from very plain to sophisticated Digital Storytelling.  The most important factor of  Digital Storytelling is that you  determine the level of sophistication.  The sophistication level would be a great assessment tool  when evaluating one's project.
When  thinking of our students today, Digital storytelling has provide an opportunity for a way to express their emotions and enthusiasm for a body of information that they wish to share or required to share.  The  chapters share  lots of information on how students would benefit  from Digital Storytelling, for example,  students are able to develop and attain planning , organization,  comprehension, and presentation skills.  It has been stated that even those students  that are reluctant  speakers  have found this approach (Digital Storytelling) less stressful.  I have in the pass allowed students to share (do research reports)  information utilizing  digital media because of the level of anxiety when speaking in front of a group.
After reflecting  on the reading and watching some pass digital storytelling videos, I am totally sold on the benefits of Digital Storytelling as an Educational Tool.  It has integrated some of the educational standards such as content, technology, and language arts.  Also,  I feel students  will be more willing to embrace Digital Storytelling due to their technology skills.  They are bombarded with technology  gadgets and need a way to utilizes these tools in an educational setting.  The most profitable information I learned from these chapters is that Digital Storytelling has a place in the educational setting when students are guided with an open-minded instructor.  The teacher ought to  have a passion for promoting students' learning with the most modern tools available.

Digital Story Reflection

I have watched several Digital Stories and I have found it hard to decide on which one to put on my blog. They all are very touching stories and bring about deep emotional feelings. Deep Water was one of those deep emotional Digital stories. Deep Water is a Digital Story by Cindy Lollar. It is a story of a loving daughter who is deeply concern with her mother's illness that is threatening her life. Her mother has stage three ovarian cancer. The story was expressed with a lot of thoughtfulness and knowledge about this disease. This (Deep Water) presentation was very well organized with appropriate pictures, music, and narration.

I was totally impressed with the overall presentation of this Digital story. As a health teacher, I enjoy stories that can give meaning to what has been learned. By expressing the emotional aspects of stage lll ovarian cancer and how it affects the whole family, I feel these Digital Stories will generate student's interest in learning more about these diseases. As part of our Health Curriculum our students are required to do research on different types of diseases. These stories would be a great motivator for our students and allow for them to implement their research in a more interesting fashion.

The assessment of this Digital Story would be based on organization, presentation, appropriate display of images, music, and research information.
